View to Big Meadows

Last Sunday the family and I went to Big Meadows- we decided to go 4 wheeling on trout creek trail- it ends up at Wagon Wheel Gap. We ended up all the way to a nice little gate that kept us from finishing our ride so we turned around and drove back. Jason wanted to fly fish for awhile so I saw my opportunity and jumped at it- I wanted to paint and promised that when they were ready to go I would comply no matter how far along the painting was. Well I got going and in 45 minutes they were ready to go- I tried to finish up as fast as I could and in my haste fell down tore my jeans and ended up with a huge bruise on my knee. No matter how romantic plein air painting sounds -- the reality can be quite different. The painting above will be in the Rio Grande show at South Fork.

The Rio Grand Headwaters Trust

I am trying to get my paintings ready for a show in South Fork entitled Keeping the Rio Grande Grand, sponsored by the Rio Grande Headwaters Trust. The Headwaters Trust working to keep the Rio Grand Corridor protected. The show will be held August 16th at the South Fork, CO, Community Center and should be great fun.
A Benefit for RiGHT.
Please join us and fine artists from the San Luis Valley and across the Southwest in support of our important conservation work.

Saturday August 16, 2008
6pm to 9pm
South Fork Community Center,
South Fork, Colorado

Why Protect the Rio Grande:
Land and water conversion from open space and agriculture to development of subdivisions on private lands threatens the integrity of the Rio Grande including: loss or degradation of wildlife habitat (including the South Western Willow Flycatcher, listed as Endangered), fragmentation and development of corridors for residential and commercial uses and transportation, increased sedimentation and pollution, introduction of invasive and exotic species, loss of agricultural productivity and its economic contributions, water table reductions and changing return flows, to name a few.

Why Now:
The Rio Grande corridor in Colorado is still relatively intact, but the threats to it are increasing at an alarming pace. Currently there are 10,700 acres of private land protected along the Rio Grande by either RiGHT, The Nature Conservancy, Ducks Unlimited or the National Resources Conservation Service. However, nearly 40,000 acres of intact private land remains unprotected and susceptible to development. This combined with the frenzied pace of growth along the Rio Grande means we need to take action now. As the American Farmland Trust report "Farming on the Edge" states, "We are losing our best land - most fertile and productive - the fastest.

I hope that this event will be well attended- I will be in attendence and am looking forward to this event. More information is at this link http://www.riograndelandtrust.org/index.html

Close to home

I am finding it increasingly difficult to get away to paint during this summer and I know I am not alone. Coni said that she seems to be rather tied down as well- I had planned a couple of weeks ago to take off towards the Alamosa River Canyon but changed my mind and ended up at the 7 mile plaza. This view looks towards the south. It is a very early morning view and I would like to come back in the evening and paint another as I like the shadows better at that time of day.

The 12th Annual PAAC Exhibition

It was a very hot Friday night in Denver for the 12 Annual PAAC exhibition at the Abend Gallery. What a beautiful night and a very well attended event. Coni and I drove up for this special event and it was worth it! The Abend did a fantastic job of hanging the show and the body of work in my opinion was above par. I was very excited for Coni as she received the artists's choice award and a cash prize! It was exciting to see so many people at an art event.
Coni took this picture of me standing in front of one of my paintings.

And the winner is..........

I don't have any pictures to post right now- I have been so busy trying to fix up my new studio /gallery that I will be moving into when it becomes a little less disastrous. You'll see real soon what I'm talking about. Well, I will be talking about that later- with pictures of course- but for now I want to talk about the cool workshop that I won with MATT SMITH in January!!!!! Yippee!! I took a workshop with Matt and Ralph Oberg about 5 years ago and really wanted to take one with Matt again but you actually have to be sitting next to your computer with your hand on the mouse ready to jump in the minute they open the class or you will miss out ; I just can't seem to jump to it as fast as other individuals..... I seem to always be a day late rather than a few minutes late so when I signed up for the contest through Sourcetek- I kept thinking about it once in awhile and would check in. Then everyone got an e-mail on June 30 announcing that they would draw names the next day - I thought cool- not really thinking much about it because the possibility of winning seemed really out of reach at the time. I was so shocked when Will Pierce called me on July 2 and said I had won- I was a blithering idiot but he was very nice. I am excited - Matt is a great guy and it will be good to see him again and I will glean as much info as possible because I don't think I was really truly ready for him the last time I took his class- I will be this time! Thank you Sourcetek!
