Creede Show on Friday, June 3.

This Friday Night, Coni Dave and I will be having a reception for our show at the Creede Theater in the Upstairs Gallery.  The name of the show is 3 Friends, 3 Painters , 3 Points of View. The reception is from 5:30 to 7:30.  These are a few pictures of the paintings that we will have hanging in the show.

Dave was the hammer and nail guy -

Here is a large painting of North Clear Creek Falls that I did for the show and some smaller paintings by each of us next to it.
More paintings

These are all paintings that we painted of downtown Creede.

I'm looking forward to the show.  I have been trying to make small truffles for it all week and am trying to plan some other food items.  I'm hoping for a good sized crowd so I keep making more food.
Try to make it to Creede - it will be a good show!

Painting for Creede

Original Creede
16x12

Coni, Dave and I will be having a show in Creede Colorado at the Creede Repertory Theater this summer from May 24- July 1, 2011.  I am thrilled because I LOVE the small town of Creede and the people that live there.  Well, anyway, Coni, Dave and I decided to drive to Creede to check out the gallery space and get at least one painting done while we were up there.  We met up with Stephen and Marta Quiller while we were there and saw the beautiful paintings that Steve is doing for the new theater space-- I would love to show them on this blog but they are a surprise-- so no revealing them here.... sorry- but I can guarantee that they are fabulously beautiful!!
We then drove up to check out the mining site north of town and to look for good painting material- I took this picture driving up the north side of the Bachelor loop- look at the amazing layout of the mining areas-
We then scouted around the original part of Creede- and I did the painting above- hence the title "Original Creede".  Here is Coni and Dave taking in the sights.

Soward Ranch paint out

On the last post I ahowed a picture of Bristol Head Mountain from the west looking at the mountain.  Well, we drove to the Soward Ranch and this is the view looking at the mountain from the east.  It was really obscurred by fog and honestly, very dramatic.  Here is a better picture of the mountain-----

I decided to give it a shot for my first painting for the paint out-- the weather had been rather rainy but was clearing fast so I really thought I could pull this off-- I never seem to get to paint mountains as much as I'd like so decided to do it when halfway through the painting the wind started to blow-- HORRIBLY-- I was standing by David Montgomery and he wisely moved close to some shelter.  I couldn't because I was painting with a pond in the front of me and had decided to put it in the painting- so I was stuck.  My umbrella flew off- and I retrieved it and just kept painting..  It's funny- when painting outside I have developed some type of concentration that earlier in my painting years, would not have been able to keep.  Also I am fortunate to have a Soltek easel that is like a rock in the wind..

I was finally able to finish..

As you can see- I pushed the drama of this mountain and I am now working on a larger version of this painting. .. I noticed that my painting is much lighter than the picture of Bristol and I really was able to see much more into the shadows than the picture shows- that's why I hate to paint from pictures.. Afterwards I tried to hang out by this cool building..
And get a little out of the wind before I started my next painting.

Soward Ranch paint out

We (Coni, David, Cindy and I) went  one day early and stayed above Creede at Santa Maria as the paint out was to start at 8:00  the next morning on Saturday- this is the view of Britol mountain from the west - coming down from Santa Maria at 7 in the morning- on our way to the paint out.
David, Cindy and Coni posing for me with a nice view in the background.  I will post my paintings from the paint out tomorrow-- I still have not had a chance to take pictures of the artwork yet.

Fun in Creede- Memorial Weekend

Artists in Creede
Here is part of the gang-- Cynthia Cutts, Charlie Ewing, Stephen Quiller, Coni Grant, me, & Rita Roberts.

A quick picture before the quick draw.
I am talking about my painting before the quick draw-- I had done a little study of Aspen up North Clear Creek Falls and did a rendition of that painting- this piece was a little larger- 9x12 while the original plein air was 8x10.

The lucky winner of the quick draw auction -- Joe and Audrey Poxson - thank you Joe and Audrey!! All proceeds of the auction were donated to the Creede chamber for upcoming art events. I think the hand holding the painting belongs to David Montgomery- thanks David!

Quick Draw in Creede!!!

Today will be filled with graduation parties good times with a lot of wonderful graduates and their parents. This year I had a reprieve from giving a graduation party but will be ready to do my last for 2011- Jason will be graduating next year and that will be it for high school activities. After 4 children- I think I will be ready - but our small community of Sargent is based around the schools- out in the middle of grain and potato fields- and I think I will miss it and all of the activities and the kids, yes especially the kids....

I will be participating in the quick draw in Creede tomorrow, Sunday, so please come up and see us painting on location under the tents in Creede. It is a great way to get a good deal on a piece of art.. Hope to see you there!

The above painting was painted at the ranch - early morning- the bugs aren't out yet- thank goodness!

After participating in the Headwaters Trust plein air event, I headed to Santa Maria, a private trout club at the base of Bristol Mountain. Jim and my son Jason had already headed up earlier and so took off at about 3:00 and watched the sky stay completely brown with dust all the way there. It was rather depressing- like a huge fire was burning close by. I got settled in to the fishing trailer and the guys were nowhere to be seen- I thought "could they be fishing in this horrible wind?" Yes they were..

Good thing because Jason woke up with the stomach flu at about 12:30 that night and plans kind of changed.. No more fishing for the guys and I stayed up on the mountain a little longer so that I could at least get one painting done. Since this area is above Creede- it wasn't even close to budding out anywhere so I had a difficult time finding anywhere that was very inspiring.

I finally settled on a group of Aspen in an area out of the wind- oh yeah - the wind was blowing by then..

I painted the above 8x10 and drove home and went through my bout with the stomach flu the next day..

Fishing Shacks at Santa Maria- a Plein Air

6x8
This small painting was done while waiting for my family to get done fishing at Santa Maria Trout Club above Creede, Colorado. I didn't have a vehicle to drive and I've always liked these little fishing shacks so I painted them from a high viewpoint.

Back from Taste of Creede

Well, I'm back from the Taste of Creede and I can honestly say that I had fun. I met up with Coni and we just kind of took in the atmosphere at first and hid out from the rain in the OMI for awhile. It was rather rainy the whole weekend but not too cold and the quick draw was quite an event. We had an hour to do a painting and then put it up for auction to benefit Creede Arts. I was stressed as for plein air one is usually allowed 2 hours for the painting time. I was even more confused when every artist pulled out these huge canvases. I was only painting an 8x10 for goodness sakes! Well they pulled it off quite well and I survived. Above is a picture of Stephen Quiller and Charlie Ewing talking about Charlie's painting (you can see it in the background.) The painting I did was the small red truck below- it resides on the north end of Creede- starting up the canyon.
